Just Read is based on these research based principles:

Picture

Access

The more access students have to a great variety of high interest reading material, the better readers they will become.
Picture

Choice

Free choice of reading material regardless of genre, reading level, or format is essential for students to become self-directed readerst.

Time

Students need daily time in a stress free environment  to develop the stamina and engagement needed to become proficient and authentic readers.
"The research base on student-selected reading is robust and conclusive: Students read more, understand more, and are more likely to continue reading when they have the opportunity to choose what they read. In a 2004 meta-analysis, Guthrie and Humenick found that the two most powerful instructional design factors for improving reading motivation and comprehension were (1) student access to many books and (2) personal choice of what to read."
Allington 2012
"There is massive, well-documented evidence that sustained silent reading (SSR) works very well for both first and second language acquirers with little or no accountability as long as certain common-sense conditions are met, e.g. a long enough duration (short-term SSR programs are not as effective as long-term programs), access to interesting reading material, a comfortable physical environment, and no anxiety over evaluation."
