Why is administrative approval important?
Teachers need to know their school administrators support free reading in the daily schedule. Many teachers would gladly give their students free reading time if they are certain their evaluators will approve.
Administrators need reassurance that Just Read Time at the minimum will not disrupt the regular teaching schedule, but that in fact it will make a positive impact on academic achievement if implemented correctly.

Schedule a meeting |
Be respectful of the administrator’s time and make an appointment to propose Just Read. Mentioning the concept casually with no preparation risks being dismissed out of hand.
|
Write a proposal |
Your proposal should be concise, upbeat, and professional. It should demonstrate how Just Read will align with your administrator's priorities and how it will be managed efficiently. Here is a sample proposal.
|
Give a positive presentation |
Make your presentation brief and upbeat. Brainstorm any possible questions and be prepared to give answers. Listen sympathetically to their concerns, and give reassuring answers.
|
Know your research |
School administrators need the reassurance that research supports all the elements of the Just Read initiative, and that it will impact academic achievement. Be prepared with specific and current research that support the best practices of access, choice, and time. Click HERE for some examples, and HERE for more.
